Four years after their critically acclaimed EP, "The Summer Tree", St. Paul’s JoJo Green returns with Paint the Sky – Part 1, a unique and diverse five-song collection that finds the band stretching its iconic eclectic sound into something more mature, expansive, and emotionally direct. 

Paint the Sky explores the exhilaration and exhaustion of life on the road, the absurdity of difficult relationships, the hazy intimacy of new love, and the complicated terrain of grief. Its musical language is equally restless. Pop melodies collide with funky beats, and soulful grooves are punctuated with rock, jazz, and countless adventurous instrumental passages. The band’s tightly-woven musicianship gives each shift a sense of purpose rather than novelty.

This record feels colorful, whimsical, and deeply human. “Get Me Back” sets the tone with a propulsive, joyful commentary on the touring life: the miles, the chaos, the dream of making it, and the pull of home. “Two Different People” turns frustration into catharsis, while the title track “Paint the Sky” drifts through the liminal space between sleep and waking before erupting into an unexpected funk breakdown, soaring guitar solo, and expansive harmonic finale. At the record’s emotional center is “Couldn’t Do Wrong,” a vulnerable meditation on love and loss. Its intimate opening features electric bass picked like an acoustic guitar, paired with a bare-bones vocal line that gradually expands into an intricate conversation between saxophone and guitar, building toward an all-encompassing emotional release. Closing the EP, “Timothy B Schmit” throws convention out the window: an avant-garde instrumental inspired by spy films, Spanish and Latin music motifs, smooth jazz ballads, and arena rock-style guitar work, it serves as both a showcase for the band’s musicianship and a mischievous hint at what lies ahead.

Paint the Sky – Part 1 is less a collection of songs than a snapshot of a band in motion — experienced enough to embrace vulnerability, restless enough to chase the unexpected, and confident enough to follow creative instincts and take chances. After four years away from the studio, JoJo Green has returned with a renewed sense of curiosity and purpose — restless enough to keep searching for what comes next: Paint the Sky – Part 2 arrives in 2027.

St. Paul’s JoJo Green brings a hot, fresh take to a cozy, nostalgic sound they call “pop fusion.” Lauded as “Bombastic!” by Mostly Minnesota Music and praised as “...a band to see!” by Americana Highways, the band blends soulful grooves, infectious melodies, adventurous musicianship, and theatrical flair into an energetic, genre-bending experience. Since forming in 2019, JoJo Green has released The Line (2021) and The Summer Tree (2022), and now returns with Paint the Sky – Part 1, a more mature and expansive five-song collection. Colorful, whimsical, vulnerable, and occasionally delightfully strange, the EP pushes the band’s pop and roots-fusion sound through pop, funk, rock, jazz, and adventurous instrumental passages — with Paint the Sky – Part 2 arriving in 2027.
